Introduction
The First Affiliated Hospital of Zhengzhou University was established in September 1928, and its predecessor was the affiliated hospital of Henan University Medical College. In 1958, it moved from Kaifeng to Zhengzhou and changed its name to the First Affiliated Hospital of Henan Medical College. It was renamed as the First Affiliated Hospital of Henan Medical University in 1985. In 2000, under the energetical supporting of the central government, the former Zhengzhou University, Zhengzhou Technology University and Henan Medical University merged. The hospital was then named as the First Affiliated Hospital of Zhengzhou University, and also known as the First Clinical College of Zhengzhou University. In 2012, the hospital was established as the hospital co-sponsored by province and the Ministry of Health. In 2017, clinical medicine was selected in the national list of world-class universities and first-class disciplines.
The hospital is currently the largest Level-3/Grade-A hospital in China which integrates medical treatment, teaching, research, prevention, health care and recuperation. It represents the higher standard of medical care ability, scientific research level, and international communicative competence in domestic. It has been successively awarded “National Civilized Unit” “top 100 best hospitals of China” “Advanced Collective of National Health System” “National Informationization Construction Advanced Unit” “National Country Hospitals Assistance Demonstration Base” “National Outstanding Contribution Team for PTC” “National Top Hospital for High Quality Nursing Service” “National Advanced Unit of Hospital Logistics Management” “National Advanced Unit for Culture Development”, and many other honorary titles. It ranks the 19th in China’s Hospital Ranking by Fudan University, and 21st in China’s Hospital Ranking by Science and Technology Evaluation Metrics.
At present, there are four hospital branches in our hospital, which are Heyi branch, Zhengdong distinct (East) branch, Huiji (North) branch, and airport zone (South) branch. These four different branches implement differential development, homogenization management, standardization construction, and normalization operation.
Culture
In the course of nearly one century development, generations of the First Affiliated Hospital of Zhengzhou University have made unremitting efforts to serve the public by adhering to the spirit of “cultivating great virtues, having extensive learning, excelling in your professions and making innovations”. The hospital with the rich cultural history will continue to make better contributions to the improvement in Henan health service.
Education
The hospital is the largest clinical base for educating senior health professionals in Henan Province. Its teaching body is composed of three schools and colleges: the College of Clinical Medicine, the School of Medical Examination and the School of Stomatology. For degree education, it teaches ZZU students including the undergraduates of clinical medicine, medical examination, preventive medicine, stomatology and medical imaging as well as postgraduates and international students. Clinical medicine and nursing are both the first-level doctoral and master degree authorized disciplines, covering all second-level disciplines. Faculties include 100 doctoral and 544 master supervisors. For continuing education, the hospital is the national base and the provincial demonstration base for standardized residents training as well as the provincial training center for standardized specialists. In all, the hospital annually cultivates over 500 postgraduates, 200 international students and 2,000 trainees from Henan and other provinces.
Medical services
The hospital's discipline of clinical medicine is listed in the national “double-first class” construction plan. On the provincial level, clinical medicine is the preponderant discipline and esophageal cancer control is a characteristic discipline. The hospital has also 20 national clinic key specialties, 27 key disciplines and 2 key cultivation disciplines. Supported by the academic advantages, the hospital aims at the latest trend of medical science and forge ahead in disease diagnosis and treatment skills. It has maintained its leading position in Henan Province and achieved the first-class level in China especially in fields related to diseases of major organs such as heart, brain, lungs, liver and kidney, as well as in the departments of E.N.T, ophthalmology and Gynecology & Obstetrics.
In recent years, a lot of world-leading technologies are applied in the hospital. Two reproductive technologies fill the international gap. The first healthy baby by using “MaReCS” to precisely block choromosome balanced translocations transferring to offspring was born here. A number of technologies fill in the domestic gap. A test-tube baby was born thanks to the “genetic diagnosis before embryonic-implantation with unicellular SNP microarray technology”. Another test-tube baby was born by applying activating dormant follicle in vitro and ovarian tissue auto-transplantation to cure premature ovarian failure. “Double core test-tube baby” that had received genetic diagnosis before embryonic-implantation with “kernel mapping and SNP chip” combined diagnosis technology to cure Huntington's disease was also born. The hospital successfully carried out “identical twin living donor liver transplantation”, genetic blocking of hypertrophic cardiomyopathy and endoscopic gastroplasty and clinically applied the “Han Xinwei-type blood vessel recoverable stent”. In addition, many skills and technology that are applied also lead the nation. The hospital is able to perform organ transplantations including heart, liver, kidney, lung, pancreas, small intesetine, cornea and skin. The number of renal and liver transplantation is among the most in China. Pediatric renal transplantation, in particular, has topped the list for five consecutive years. 3D printing technology has been implemented in many clinical specialties. Da Vinci surgical robot has been used in urinary, gynaecology, liver and gall, the stomach and intestine, chest and other operations, marking that surgery in Henan has entered the AI era.
Research facilities and conditions of the hospital have been improving, as evidenced by the 5 academician workstations, 3 post-doctoral research stations, 1 national engineering laboratory, 1 engineering laboratory jointly run by both the country and the local place, 1 National Health Commission key laboratory, 10 subcenters of national clinical medicine research centers, 10 provincial key laboratories, 4 provincial clinical medicine research centers, 10 provincial engineering technology research centers, 31 provincial engineering laboratories and research centers, 20 provinvcial international united laboratories, 75 municipal and departmental key laboratories, and 21 university-level research institutes and centers. In recent years, total hospital scientific research projects and awards rank first stably in health system in Henan Province, and it has conducted over 2,000 scientific research projects at and above ministerial level including national benefiting people special projects through science and technology, national high-tech research & development projects (“863” Plan), national natural science fund and major scientific and technological projects of Henan Province. The hospital has also has got more than 300 scientific achievements. Among them, there are 1 second prize of National Prize for Progress in Science and Technology, 1 first prize of Chinese Medical Science and Technology Award and 10 Henan Progress in Science and Technology. The scientific and technological influence power of the hospital becomes stronger day by day and tops the list in the country.
